Strength, Stability, Security – A New Fence for Cherry Lane

Our Challenge

Without the ability to make a home, the sad truth is the youth we serve would be at risk of homelessness, hospitalization, and even human trafficking. Because residential foster care is complex both in treatment and resources needed, Youth Homes is one of the last remaining short term residential treatment facilities in the East Bay.

Last year we launched the Welcome Home Campaign to improve the spaces that our youth deserve to come home to. Our vision was to instill a sense of pride, confidence, and self-love in the youth we care for. Investing in our homes always means investing in our youth.

A New and Exciting Partnership

Much of the work accomplished during the Welcome Home campaign unfolded in partnership. Community heroes and volunteers came together and allowed us to save time and money to complete projects that would otherwise have been deferred.

This past month, a fence installation project at Cherry Lane spurred a new and exciting partnership with the hardworking team at Rebuilding Together East Bay North. Rebuilding Together’s mission is to work to bring warmth, safety, and independence to neighborhoods by revitalizing neighborhood facilities. Their vision is to provide safe homes and communities for everyone.

The fence at Cherry Lane has been in disrepair for years. With Rebuilding Together at our side, installation took just two weeks. During week one, under the supervision of the Rebuilding Together team, Boys Team Charity The Oaks League removed the old, worn structure and dug holes to prepare for new fence posts and panels.

Week two saw the arrival of 11 volunteers from Berkeley Labs and, under the expert guidance of Rebuilding Together, they installed almost 200 feet of 6-foot-high redwood panels.

“Our goal is to preserve these houses and neighborhoods and assure a warm, dry and safe home for people in need. We provide the same assistance to local community organizations and nonprofits because we recognize how crucial their support is for so many of our neighbors. We are proud to contribute to their ability to effectively serve people in need right here in our own neighborhood.”

The project was underwritten by Rebuilding Together through grants from AmeriCorps Senior RSVP. We are also grateful to Republic Services for donating a dumpster for the project.

The resulting fence is stable, strong, and secure. It is an example of what is achieved through partnership and community. Click here to donate or learn more about volunteer opportunities.

Check back next month to see a team from CPC Danville in action adding a coat of stain on the fence to protect it for years to come.
