Youth Homes Auxiliary
What happens when imagination and loving kindness come together?
In 1965, when Youth Homes was incorporated as a tax-exempt, non-profit agency, few people realized the impact of Youth Homes’ secret asset: The Youth Homes Auxiliary.
The Auxiliary, born about the same time as Youth Homes, had a mission of their very own: How to directly improve the lives of children who had been traumatized?
They focused on big ideas (college scholarships) and delightful small ideas (a cake with candles to celebrate each kid’s birthday). And they added some essentials — from a new backpack filled with towels and other practical items to day-to-day necessities (transportation funds for work and/or school, a clothing budget) and assistance to the Agency (household repairs and replacement items). In addition, the Auxiliary sponsors fundraising and friendship-building projects (A Day at the Races and the Spring Fashion Show). Auxiliary entrepreneurs created a Thrift Shop — a bargain-hunter and antique-seeker’s paradise, and the shop has flourished for many, many years. Since its founding, the Auxiliary has contributed more than $500,000 in funds to directly benefit Youth Homes kids.
But when you talk with Youth Homes employees and clients, they’re more likely to focus on the kindness and generosity of Auxiliary members. We hear stories about a Thrift Shop volunteer who helped a young woman find a dress to wear to her first prom or helped a young man apply for an Auxiliary-sponsored college scholarship. And every year the Auxiliary hosts the Celebration of Hope, an agency-wide recognition event, attended by our youth, Auxiliary members and Youth Homes employees. It’s our favorite day of the year.
The Auxiliary is one-of-a-kind — and completely irreplaceable. To find out how you could become a member of this dedicated and successful team fill out the form below.
